The month kicks off with The Numberlys. On Saturday, July 12, at 11 a.m., stores nationwide will celebrate reading via a free event for children ages 3 to 7 featuring William Joyce’s new picture book, The Numberlys. Based on the award-winning app, this is author William Joyce’s homage to everyone who knows there is more to life than shades of black and gray.

The events center around the popular children’s books The Numberlys by author William Joyce, with illustrations by William Joyce and Christina Ellis; What Do You Do With an Idea by author Kobi Yamada and illustrator Mae Brown; and the July Storytime en Español, Si le das una galletita a un raton (If You Give a Mouse a Cookie) by Laura Numeroff.
The Numberlys is the creative story about friends with dull lives because there are only boring numbers. So, they break out hard hats and welders, hammers and glue guns, and start creating numbers. One letter after another emerges until there are 26, and when the letters enter the world, something truly wondrous begins to happen like Pizza! Jelly beans! Color! Books! The book highlights the process of making art and the thrill of discovering new things through one’s imagination.

From July 15 to August 25, while supplies last, customers who want to bring the fun home can buy The Numberlys for only $8.99 (regularly priced at $17.99) with the purchase of any children’s book.
Participants will also enjoy a reading of the The Numberlys NOOK Book.® The beautiful illustrations will inspire kids to draw on NOOK’s Drawing Pad app. Coloring and activities round out the fun.
What Do You Do With an Idea – On Tuesday, July 29, at 11 a.m., stores across the country will host a free Storytime for children ages 3 and up featuring What Do You Do With an Idea? by author Kobi Yamada and illustrator Mae Brown.
This is the story of one brilliant idea and the child who helps to bring it into the world. As the child’s confidence grows, so does the idea itself. And then, one day, something amazing happens. This is a story for anyone, at any age, who’s ever had an idea that seemed a little too big, too odd, or too difficult. It’s a story to inspire children and parents to welcome that idea, to give it some space to grow, and to see what happens next. Because that idea isn’t going anywhere. In fact, it’s just getting started. Following the story, children will experience the Drawing Pad and other art apps on NOOK.
Cuentacuentos: Storytime en Español – During July, at select Barnes & Noble stores, children and their parents can experience a reading of the Spanish-language picture book, Si le das una galletita a un ratón (If You Give a Mouse a Cookie). This award-winning story by Laura Numeroff is non-stop fun. One thing leads to another in this imaginative tale of doing someone a favor. A boy offers a mouse a cookie, but then the mouse wants a glass of milk, then a straw and then a napkin. Next, he must check in the mirror to see that he hasn’t any milk on his mustache, which leads to a hair trim, and so on.
Language learning through immersion-style events is key to the Common Core Standards and other curriculum programs. Barnes & Noble’s Spanish Storytimes will appeal to parents who want their children to learn a language and native Spanish speakers looking to enjoy their language and increase their children’s vocabularies through listening to stories read aloud.
