High quality extra virgin olive oil producer Bellucci Premium responds to an article published by The Washington Post that discusses a study suggesting children who adhere to a Mediterranean diet are less likely to become obese or overweight.

According to an article published by The Washington Post titled “Mediterranean diet has many health benefits, and may help control kids’ weight,” children who are on a Mediterranean diet have a lower risk of obesity.  In a study conducted in eight European countries, children ages 2-9 who were on a Mediterranean diet were 15% less likely to be overweight or obese than those who were not on a Mediterranean diet.  Previous research of the Mediterranean diet’s effects on adults has shown that it can reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and heart disease.

Susan Testa, Director of Sales and Marketing for high quality Tuscan olive oil producer Bellucci Premium, says, “The childhood obesity crisis can end with the help of the Mediterranean diet.  This diet encourages the consumption of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, olive oil, moderate amounts of chicken and fish, and nuts.  These foods offer high amounts of fiber and omega fatty acids while limiting sugar, carbohydrates, and flour.  By introducing children to healthy eating habits early in life, these habits will be carried into adulthood.”
